Man in the garden

Today I did again a new watercolour sketch project. The subject is ‘greenery’ in the broadest sense of the word. I learned to make the green tones by mixing blue and yellow. More blue for the shadow and more yellow for the light parts of the sketch.

I saw this scene appear on pinterest. I thought it would be fun to sketch this out, trying to focus on the man who is reading the newspaper and the tree behind him. Because of the many shades of green it was not so easy, but somehow my feeling tells me that I have succeeded in my goal. Perfect? No, certainly not, but another experience richer.

Maybe I should mention that for this sketch on A5, I used a new set of watercolors. The set is by Talens (Van Gogh) and includes the following basic colours: yellow lemmon, permanent red, ultramarine deep, yellow ochre, sap green, azo yellow medium, Madder Lake deep, cerulean blue phtalo, Viridian and burnt Sienna.

Lovely watercolour picture. The new watercolours set me thinking about inks. If I had to live with a more minimal supply than I currently have, I could be happy with something approximating the two reds and the two blues in the Talens Van Gogh palette.

Yes these are nice colours. The lighter blue is the Cerulean blue phtalo, for this an alternative may be the Iroshizuki Ama-iro. I don’t have many red ink for fountain pen, at work it’s not much appreciated to write in red 😉
